Tip! The sandwiches can be made up fresh upon request, so if there is something you don't want in it just say so.
This self service restaurant is beautifully decorated with old English tea room inspired décor.
If you want to enjoy the fresh air a bit there’s always the terrace!

Het Witte Paard

Er was eens een arm werkpaard dat zijn dagen sleet bij een gemene oude boer. Het paard stond eenzaam en alleen in een vochtige schuur. Zijn vacht was grijs en grauw. Ach, had ik maar een vriendje, dacht het paard vaak.

Op een dag spande de boer hem voor de ploeg. De grond was hard en het viel niet mee om vooruit te komen. ‘Sneller, luie donder!’ tierde de boer, die hem sloeg met de zweep. ‘Werken moet je, tot je er bij neervalt!’

Plotseling kwam er een koets voorbij rijden. Er zaten kleine kinderen in die vrolijke liedjes zongen. Maar het paard had vooral oog voor de vreemde zwarte hengst die de koets trok. Zijn lange staart kreeg een blauwgroene schittering in de morgenzon. Heel bijzonder voor een paard.
‘Waar sta jij naar te staren, ouwe knol?’ riep de boer. ‘Vort!’ De zweep knalde weer, terwijl de koets uit het zicht verdween.

Die avond zat er een pauw op het dak van de schuur. Hij stak zijn kop door een gat in het dak. ‘Ik zag dat je flink met de zweep kreeg.’
‘O, heeft u dat gezien?’ vroeg het paard verbaasd. ‘Dat is helaas nooit anders geweest.’
‘Dan wordt het tijd dat je ontsnapt.’
‘Maar waar moet ik heen?’ vroeg het paard.
‘Loop meteen het bos in,’ zei de pauw. ‘Dan komt het goed.’ En van het ene op het andere moment was hij verdwenen.

Het paard besloot dat de pauw gelijk had. De ellende had lang genoeg geduurd. De volgende dag was het zondag. Het paard wist dat de boer dan altijd wegging, al wist hij niet waar naartoe. Maar dit was het beste moment om te ontsnappen.
Met een woeste trap schopte het paard de schuurdeur uit zijn scharnieren. Hij draafde het bos in en genoot van de vrijheid. Maar na een tijdje werd hij moe en hongerig.

Plotseling verscheen de pauw weer. ‘Hou vol!’ riep de vogel opgewekt. ‘Je gaat de goede kant op.’ En weg was hij weer. Het paard wandelde verder, steeds dieper het bos in. Maar de moed zonk hem in zijn hoeven.

De volgende dag kruiste de pauw opnieuw zijn pad. ‘Hou vol, zo gaat ie goed!’ Opnieuw verdween de vogel in het bos. Het paard zag nog net een glimp van de prachtige pauwenstaart. Hij moest opeens denken aan de hengst met de schitterende staart, die de koets had getrokken.

Ook de dagen daarop kwam de pauw even zeggen dat hij vooral vol moest houden. Maar het arme paard kón niet meer. Hij sleepte zich al veel te lang voort zonder eten en drinken.
De ochtend van de zevende dag stond de pauw weer voor zijn neus.
‘O nee, hè?’ riep het paard boos. ‘Daar komt ie weer aan met z’n “Hou vol”!’
Maar de pauw zei blij: ‘Deze keer niet, want je bent er.’

En warempel, het volgende moment kwam hij op een zonnige open plek. Er stond een statig wit huis met bijzondere vazen op het dak. Door de openstaande deuren klonken vrolijke stemmen en bij het terras speelden kinderen. Die liepen op hem af en klopten hem zachtjes op zijn flanken.
‘Wat ziet hij er slecht uit,’ zei een meisje. ‘Zo mager en vies.’
Toen mocht het paard van hun bordjes eten en uit hun glazen drinken. Het smaakte verrukkelijk.
De waard van het theehuis kwam naar buiten. ‘Nou, nou, wat zie jij eruit, ouwe jongen! We zullen je een grondige opknapbeurt geven.’

Zodra het paard zijn buik vol had gingen de kinderen met emmers sop in de weer. Ze schrobden en borstelden zijn vacht, wasten en kamden zijn manen en bleven hem maar knuffelen. Het werkpaard voelde zich opeens een luxepaard en genoot met volle teugen.
‘Je lijkt nu wel een paradepaard met die mooie glanzende vacht!’ zei de waard. Hij nam het paard mee naar binnen, waar vrolijke mensen aan prachtig gedekte tafels zaten.
‘Beste mensen!’ riep de waard. ‘Herkent iemand misschien dit mooie paard? Het is vandaag aan komen lopen.’ De meeste mensen schudden van nee.

Plotseling kreeg het paard de schrik van zijn leven. Vlak bij hem zat de gemene boer! Maar tot zijn verbazing herkende die hem niet. De boer zei: ‘Wat een mooie knol heb je daar, baas! Da’s wel wat anders dan dat lelijke beest dat vorige week bij mij is weggelopen. Nou ja… die had z’n beste tijd toch al gehad!’

Opgelucht draaide het paard zijn hoofd. Toen zag hij zijn spiegelbeeld in een grote blinkende vaas. Maar het was geen grauw, grijs paard dat hij daar zag. Nee, daar stond een schitterend wit paard, rechtop en fier. Het gaf hem een warm, trots gevoel.

De waard nam hem mee naar buiten. ‘Nou, als je dan van niemand bent, moet je maar hier blijven wonen. En vanaf nu heet mijn mooie pand “Het Witte Paard”!’

‘Je ziet het, hè?’ zei de pauw even later tegen het paard. ‘Als je maar volhoudt.’
‘Jazeker, dankzij u,’ antwoordde het paard blij.
‘Zeg maar jij, hoor,’ lachte de pauw. En voor zijn ogen veranderde de vogel in de hengst met de blauwe staart. Het witte paard was sprakeloos.
‘Als je voortaan hier woont, dan kunnen we vrienden zijn,’ zei het andere paard.
‘Dit is de mooiste dag van mijn leven!’ juichte het witte paard. Hij steigerde van plezier.

De nieuwe vrienden werden samen voor een koets gespannen. De kinderen klommen erin en zingend reden ze weg. Hun lied klonk als muziek in de schoongepoetste oren van het overgelukkige witte paard:

‘Op zondag drinken we limonade
En eten we slagroomtaart
Dan spelen we de hele dag
Bij het Witte Paard!’

The White Horse

There was once a poor work horse that spent its days with a mean old farmer. The horse stood lonely and alone in a damp shed. Its fur was gray and and hoar. “Oh if I only had a little friend” the horse thought often.

One day the farmer harnessed him to the plough. The ground was hard and progress was difficult. “Faster, you lazy thing!” the farmer who whipped him ranted. “Work! Until you drop!”

Suddenly a coach drove past. It had little children in it who were singing cheerful songs. But the horse was especially interested in the strange black stallion who pulled the carriage. Its long tail shone blue green in the morning sun. “ What are you staring at old nag?” shouted the farmer. “Get!” The whip cracked again while the coach disappeared from view.

That evening there sat a peacock on the roof of the shed. He put his head through a hole in the roof. “I saw you getting fiercely whipped” “Oh you saw that?” the horse asked with some surprise. “It has always been like that unfortunately”” then its time you escaped” “ But where would I go” asked the horse. “Walk into the forest straight away” Said the peacock “Then everything will be all right” The next minute he disappeared.

The horse decided that the peacock was right. The misery had lasted long enough. The next day was a Sunday. The horse knew that the farmer always went away on that day although he did not know where. But this was the best time to escape. With a savage kick the horse kicked the shed door out of its hinges. He trotted into the forest and enjoyed his freedom. But after a little while he grew tired and hungry.

Suddenly the peacock appeared again.”Hold on!” the bird shouted cheerfully. “You are going the right way”. And he was gone again. The horse walked on, deeper and deeper into the forest. But his courage was sinking into his hooves.

The next day the peacock crossed paths with him again. ”Hold on! You are on the right track” Again the bird vanished into the forest. The horse just about saw a glimpse of its beautiful tail. He was suddenly reminded of the stallion that had the brilliant tail, the one who pulled the carriage.

Also in the following days the peacock came for a moment and kept telling him to hold on. But the poor horse couldn’t. He had been dragging himself along for too long without food or drink. On the morning of the seventh day the peacock again stood before him. “Oh no” The horse shouted angrily. “Here he comes again with his ‘hang on!’ “But the peacock said happily: “Not this time because you are there.”

And sure enough, the very next moment he came to a sunny spot. There stood a stately white house with peculiar vases on the roof. Through the open doors happy voices sounded and on the terrace children were playing. They ran to him an patted him gently on his flanks. “He looks so dreadful” A girl said. “So thin and dirty” Then they let the horse eat off their plates and drink from their glasses. It tasted delicious. The host of the teahouse came outside. “Now, now you’re a sight old boy! We will give you a thorough makeover.”

As soon as the horse had eaten his fill the children started on him with buckets of soap. They scrubbed and brushed his fur, washed and combed his mane and kept hugging him. The work horse felt like a luxurious horse and was enjoying it very much. “You look like a parade horse with that lovely shiny fur!” said the host. He took the horse inside, where cheerful people were sitting at splendidly decked out tables. “Dear people” shouted the host. “Does anyone recognize this beautiful horse? It walked in today." Most people shook their head.

Suddenly the horse was terribly frightened. Right by him sat the mean farmer! But to his surprise the farmer didn’t recognize him. The farmer said “What a nice nag you’ve got there, host! It’s very different from the ugly beast that ran away from me last week. Well... its best days were behind it anyway!”

Relieved the horse turned its head. Then he saw his reflection in a big shiny vase. But it wasn’t a hoar, gray horse that he saw. No, there stood a splendid white horse straight and proud. It gave him a warm proud feeling.

The host took him outside. “Well if you don’t belong to anyone then you will just have to live here. And from now on my lovely establishment will be called ‘The White Horse’!"

“You see don’t you?” said the peacock to the horse a little while later. “As long as you hold on””Yes certainly, thanks to you” The horse answered happily. “If you say so” the peacock laughed. And before his eyes the bird turned into the blue tailed stallion. The white horse was speechless. “If you will be living here from now on, we could be friends.” said the other horse. "This is the best day of my life!” cheered the white horse. He reared in his joy.

The new friends were strung in front of the carriage together. The children climbed inside and they rode away singing. Their song sounded like music in polished clean ears of the overjoyed horse:

“On Sundays we drink lemonade
And eat whipped cream pie
Then we play the whole day long
At ’The White Horse’!”
