Allergens
|
Unfortunately most of the food places in the park do not have a menu. Those that do have a menu usually don't have allergens marked though they will sometimes mark whether a dish is vegan or vegetarian. That said, every food place should have an allergy card you can view upon request.
At sweet shop De Soete Inval however most of the pick & mix sweets are clearly marked. Most prepackaged items in the park will also have allergy information on the packet. The Efteling cannot completely rule out the cross-contamination of allergens in their kitchens but Staff are happy to share the efforts they make in the preparation process to enable you to make a well-considered choice on the basis of your personal situation. |
|
This video shows behind the scenes at Hongerige Machinist where they use a seperate fryer for allergen free foods. All the fried snack locations now have this. They've put together a teaching plan and procedures for all employees at all the locations so that it's clear which fryer to use for such products and how to handle allergen free products. They are legally required to indicate if any of 14 allergens are present or could be present.
If a person comes and orders one of the allergen free products, the person who normally only cooks the chips will then be responsible for cooking your allergen free products as well to reduce cross contanimation between the other snacks. The allergen free products are chips, Frikandel and kroket. Though some other products may be naturally devoid of certain allergens for example the bami snack or the mexicano doesn't contain fish so people with a shellfish allergy could consume them. They can also offer prepackaged condiment cups of curry sauce, ketchup or mayo which don't contain mustard. They also have egg free mayo. |
|
In 60 locations within the park the food stand has a digital way of accessing the allergen information for their products which they can then print out and show you on a little card in 4 different languages. So if you're at all unsure do ask.
At Backereij Krumel they use special products that are lactose and gluten free that can come to them prepacked to reduce the risk of cross contamination. These are brownies and bread buns. They have gluten & lactose free pizza bottoms with cheese. They are made to order in the same kitchen as food with allergens so they can't completely rule out cross contamination here.
At Polle's keuken gluten & lactose free & egg free pancakes are made fresh in a seperate kitchen in the back with any topping you want. The pancake is served covered with cling film to avoid cross contamination and your own wooden disposable cutlery is also provided.

Gluten
|
The Efteling is aware of coeliac disease and many places have gluten free alternatives available upon request.
Translations below Gluten = Gluten Gluten Free = Glutenvrij Without Gluten = Zonder gluten Coeliac - Coeliakie Wheat = Tarwe Rye = Rogge Barley = Gerst Oats = Haver Even though many of the staff at the Efteling understand and speak English well you may wish to consider making and bringing an allergy card for peace of mind.

Kashba:
🥗As a buffet style restaurant there are elements that don't contain gluten but as there are also many elements that do, there is a high risk of cross contamination.

♥️De Gebrande Boon - Heart shaped cookie NGCI or GF ?
Casa Caracol - Nachos NGCI or GF?
🌭Unox - I've read that the meat sausage is GF so could potentially bring your own bun but there would probably be a high risk of cross contamination.
Also beware the vegetarian sausage is NOT GF - contains wheat.
Kashba - salmon & chips may be able to be prepared GF?
🍝Pinnokio's some pasta and pizza dishes there can be made GF?
🍖Until 5th Jan you can still book dinner at Het Wapen van Raveleijn which I'm told they can adapt to make GF.

They have GF pasta

🍽️Loonsche Land dinner :

Salmon
Autumn salad
Steak

Farmhouse ham

🍽️ Brasserie 7:
Breakfast at Brasserie 7:
We came down early for breakfast around 07:15 to avoid the rush and hopefully maximise GF options available.
The host welcomed us and after informing him about the allergy he said there would be a gluten free breakfast plate prepared specially for us and answered our questions. The GF breakfast plate consisted of a white bread subroll, 2 mini croissants, a cracker and an Odenwald bakery blueberry muffin.
The breads are covered in foil before going into a shared oven to keep them safe from cross contamination.
From the breakfast specials menu, we were told the Eggs Benedict could be made entirely gluten free and we could also order freshly made GF pancakes if we wanted. Clean pots & pans & utensils are used to prepare them.
We could request any meats or cheeses from the buffet brought out from a fresh packet. These came on a plate covered in cling film to avoid any cross contamination.
There were also various gluten free TLANT granola's available at the buffet which we could also request from a freshly opened box/packet.
The buffet also offered sealed jars of Pur Natur yoghurt, whole fruit, soft boiled and hard boiled eggs and sealed TLANT granola crackers. There were also various TLANT jams and spreads available from dispensers. The dispensers were generally not labelled with allergens but according to TLANT's website the jams are gluten free but the hazelnut spread and peanut butter may contain gluten.
I contacted Teacultures which is the brand used at the Grand Hotel and all their teas are GF.
The hot water for tea came out of a separate spout on the coffee machine.
There was also milk, juice, Chocomel and Fristi available from pouring jugs.
During breakfast there was a mime artist dressed as a bell hop being silly which was fun
----
Lunch at Brasserie 7:
For lunch we were advised that the gluten free food would take longer to arrive as everything will be cleaned down. Our server had a relative with coeliac so was very understanding.
There were quite a few options here leading us to have lunch here twice during our stay.
From the lunch menu the below could be made GF:
Smoked Ribeye Carpaccio
Marinated Salmon
Caesar salad can be GF as croutons can be left out
Caprese salad
All the rolls can be made GF as they have GF bread, these are prepared separately, baked in a non GF oven but wrapped up in foil and on clean trays.
They either have the white sub roll you recognise from breakfast or the seeded roll we saw at Mystique. What you get will depend on what's available.
Depending on the soup of the day it may also be GF. I had the mushroom soup which was GF.
Crispy cod can be made GF (ours came as a plain pan-fried cod rather than breaded/battered etc.)
Vegetarian or beef burger can be made GF with GF bun
Bavette can be GF if herb butter is not chosen
Vintage beetroot can't be made GF
You are also free to order from the children's menu but I forgot to ask questions about what's GF there.
Chips can be fried separately in a separate pan but you will need to ask for this
Mixed salad can be made GF by not adding croutons
Seasonal vegetables are GF
In terms of desserts, we were told at lunch that three of the desserts could be made GF (Creme brulee, sabayon and cheese board) but we were too full to have any.
I would strongly advise checking on the day as we were later told at dinner that in fact none of the desserts could be made GF.
Note that hot drinks will always come with a biscuit of some kind which is not GF.
You can try and ask for them to leave it out (we forgot) but as drinks are handled by a separate team you may still be served one.
----
Dinner at Brasserie 7:
Dinner had similar options to lunch:
Carpaccio could be made GF
Crispy cod could be GF without the crispy
Bavette could be GF as long as you don't choose the herb butter
Catch of the day can be GF depending on the accompanying sauce
Burger or vegetarian burger with GF bread
Celeriac depending on which sauces they're doing that day
Chips can be fried separately in a separate pan but you will need to ask for this
Mixed salad can be made GF by not adding croutons
Seasonal vegetables are GF
From the Kids menu:
Mini burger can be GF
Crispy cod cannot be GF as these are breaded/battered cod bites
Steak can be GF
Pasta cannot be GF as they don't have any GF pasta here
At dinner we were told none of the desserts could be made GF but this seems unlikely given our conversation at lunch time.
It was busy so we didn't question further.
During dinner there was a also a mime artist dressed as a bell hop interacting with the diners

🍽️ Mystique - see previous post:
Spoilers below for those who want to know:
We had dinner at Mystique at the Efteling Grand Hotel on 9th November 2025.
We left it a bit too late so struggled to get a reservation. We signed up to the waiting list just in case and a spot opened up the day before.
The link in the email didn't work so we rang to book.
The whole dinner is meant to be sort of a surprise but I did my best to write everything we had down.
The hostess was very kind and took our coats after welcoming us at the front desk.
We chose a 3 course dinner for 2 with juice pairing (a 4 course dinner option is also available) and as one of our party has Coeliac disease we asked for everything to be gluten free and vegetarian. We made sure to mention this when making the booking also.
To go along with the 3 course dinner, you get to choose 3 stones which correspond with a list of magical ingredients from the menu.
These help determine the "flavour formula" and the intermediate dishes you will get.
They assured us that every precaution will be taken so that we could eat safely and encouraged us to choose freely as almost everything could be modified.
Spoilers ahead!!
At the start, they light a candle on the table which is made of herb butter and slowly melts during dinner. This is served with bread which for us was a seeded GF bread roll.
Amuse bouche 1: Carrot crisp with pear gel & sour cream
Amuse bouche 2: Berry gazpacho with lime zest
Chosen ingredient/dish 1: Anura's pearl - White chocolate pearl with lemon zest and lemon balm liquid inside. Served with Camomile lemon mousse on a decorative shell. The white chocolate surrounding the pearl is very thin and the liquid inside is also thin (like a liqueur) so recommend eating in one bite!
Chosen ingredient/dish 2: Quetzalquoti Vegetable Taco - Carrot crisp with avocado puree, feta cheese and toasted quinoa
1st course (starter): Smoked red beet roll, topped with shredded mature camembert cheese and miniature golden beets topped with buckwheat, served with a Kefir horseradish sauce
1st juice pairing - Drink made of smoked beetroot, smoked oil and earl grey tea
Chosen ingredient/dish 3: Steaming mushrooms - Frozen parmesan cheese encased in mushroom meringue, liquorice. Very cool presentation - the "steaming mushrooms" look like charcoal briquettes and are served on a bed of real charcoal. They are prepared with dry ice and you are advised to eat it immediately. This has the effect of blowing 'smoke' from your nostrils/mouth as you eat it (!) It also leaves a black residue on your tongue which is cool.
2nd course (main course): Braised cabbage cooked in beetroot topped with egg yolk mousse (?) and sunflower seeds. Sits on a bed of buttermilk potato puree, surrounded by a foamy lovage sauce.
2nd juice pairing - Apple, pear & honey
Amuse bouche 3: Strawberry & mint ice cream, pepper foam, meringue shards
3rd course (dessert): Ice cream made from porcini mushrooms on a dark chocolate mousse with orange pieces
3rd juice pairing: Orange & white chocolate (I thought this tasted a bit like jaffa cakes)
I also ordered a Toverthee - "magical" tea made of butterfly pea flower and elderflower. Comes with a shot of lime which changes the colour of your drink when you combine the two.
Finished the meal with a decaf cappuccino.
I hoped to see Aquanura from the window but not long after it started people from the bar went out on the balcony which unfortunately did block the view. You also can't hear the music inside the restaurant.
We could still see some of it. We didn't want to leave the table to go out onto the balcony as dishes were coming out all the time.
Our reservation was at 17:45 and we settled up around 21:30. We're slow people and took a while deciding but they do advise allowing around 2-3 hours.
Many of the pictures I took here:
🛒The local Albert Heijn supermarket was a big one and had lots of clearly marked GF own brand items including cakes and freezer items.
I took lots of pictures so you can see how much of what you see on line could potentially be found in the Kaatsheuvel branch
There is also a large Jumbo in Kaatsheuvel but we didn't make it that far so not sure on the local range but they do have a good GF range on line.

Lactose
|
Efteling is slowly waking up to vegans which is helpful to those who are allergic to lactose or eggs.
Translations below Lactose = Lactose Lactose Free = Lactosevrij Without Lactose = Zonder Lactose Milk = Melk Cow Milk = Koemelk Plantaardig = Plant Based Vegan = Veganistisch Vegetarian = Vegetarisch Allergy Card:
You can also print the following on a card to show if you wish. 'Goedendag, ik wil u graag laten weten dat ik een lactose intolerantie heb. Ik kan daarom geen melk, boter, room, yoghurt, kaas en andere melkbestanddelen eten of drinken. Kunt u mij alstublieft vertellen welk gerecht ik van de menukaart kan nemen? En wilt u de chef-kok hiervan op de hoogte brengen? Hartelijk bedankt voor uw hulp.' |

Nuts
|
Due to Indonesian culinary influence the Dutch are quite fond of peanut sauce. This is offered as a condiment sauce to chips at some places and is often used on chicken satay. Frau Bolte's Kuche is best for chips if you have a peanut allergy though do still make the staff aware.
Nuts are also often available as toppings for ice creams and salads. If you tell your server they will take it seriously and do what they can. Translations below Nuts = Noten Peanut = Pinda Hazelnut = Hazelnoot |
