The Peddler's Story
Written by the Efteling for Sprookjes van de Efteling - deel 8 1978 vinyl record Translated by Milena "Boudewijn was a peddler, a merchant. Every week he would come to the Efteling’s village square with his large wooden box on his back which contained all sorts of things. Jewelry, clothes, candy, tobacco, yarn and ribbons. Too many things to mention. It was like a tiny store that he carried with him everywhere. Boudewijn was always welcome because he was a nice man and many people wanted to buy his wares when he walked into the village. 🎵There is the peddler Boudewijn! Boudewijn Boudewijn what will it be? Liquorice and shoe polish and a patch of satin. Yes then we need to come see you! Boudewijn Boudewijn peddler Boudewijn! 🎵 |

Woman: 'Hello Boudewijn! Let me see what you have with you this week.'
Boudewijn: 'A lovely patch of silk madam! Look here! And very cheap!'
Woman: 'Ooh! Ahh!
I have no money for silk Boudewijn. Give me a couple of new tea towels for now.
Hey, what’s that little box there?'
Boudewijn: 'Oh that’s not for sale. That’s something for me.'
Woman: 'Oh but what’s in it then?'
Boudewijn: 'My aren’t you curious. Oh go on then. I’ll tell you. In there are laughing pills.'
Woman: 'Laughing pills? Oh now you’re pulling my leg Boudewijn...'
Boudewijn: 'Haha I certainly am not. If you take one of those pills you suddenly become very cheerful and you’ll laugh, whether you want to or not.'
Woman: 'Oh but you don’t need anything like that, haha you’re always in good spirits.'
Boudewijn: 'True, true but it’s for later. You know when I’m older maybe. Who knows there may come a day where I’ll be in great need for one of those. Who knows. So I won’t think of selling it.'
Woman: 'Ohhh Boudewijn'
Boudewijn: 'No, no here you go, two tea towels, a red one and a blue one. Is that all right?'
Woman: 'Yes they seem all right, how much are they?'
Boudewijn: 'Ah they are terribly precious but since you’re not just anyone…. Hahaha….'
Yes, that Boudewijn the peddler is a lovely man and he had quite a pleasant life. Even though he had to lug his box everywhere on his back.
Though one day something happened that wasn’t very nice.
It had gotten late and it had gotten dark and when he had to make his way back through the big fairy tale forest he could barely find his way.
Plus, to make matters worse, it had started to rain and it was getting windy as well.
Pretty soon he could hear thunder. It brought a storm worse than he’d seen in years.
The sky was pitch black and the wind howled all around him. And then suddenly!
-crack of thunder-
Boudewijn: 'Help, what happened? I can hardly see! Oh, oh, oh my leg! How my leg hurts! Where is my box of merchandise?
I’m completely tangled in leaves and branches. I think a tree must have been hit by lightning and fell into the road. Luckily it missed most of me but I am caught between these branches.
I’ll try and see if I can get out from under it. No, no I can’t do it. Ahh aah! How my leg hurts! I hope I haven’t broken my leg!
Oh! Quiet now someone’s coming! Hello? Is anyone there? I can’t see so well in the dark. Hey, answer me!
Devil take him he’s taking my box! He’s stealing all my things! Help! Stop! Thief! Oh if only I could chase after him. How terrible that I’m trapped here!'
🎵It’s night, it’s dark the storm wind howls, poor Boudewijn what will happen to you.
How long will you lie there in the rain and cold. Is there no-one who would help you now?🎵
Boudewijn: 'How long have I been here? I’m not sure. All night probably. It’s only now getting lighter.
Oh ow! My leg is starting to hurt more and more, what am I to do?'
Marijke: 'Hello? Is someone there?'
Boudewijn: 'Yes! Me here under the branches, can you come and help me?'
Marijke: 'Of course!'
Marijke: 'Here I am, oh there you are poor man. Hey, aren’t you Boudewijn the peddler?'
Boudewijn: 'Yes, that’s me. And if I’m not mistaken you’re Marijke from the village.'
Marijke: 'Oh Boudewijn, what happened?'
Boudewijn: 'The tree fell down because of the lightning and I’m under it. Only I can’t get out on my own. Will you help me?'
Marijke: 'Of course but I don’t know if I’m strong enough. Let’s see if I can bandage your leg first.'
Marijke helped the peddler as well as she could.
She happened to be carrying a basket of cheese and bread which was handy as the man was very hungry by now of course.
After working hard for a while she managed to free the peddler from the branches and leaves. Limping and leaning on Marijke they walked back to the village where the doctor put a great big bandage around his leg and told him he’d need to rest a long while.
Well this wasn’t very good news for the peddler.
Boudewijn: 'Do you know what the doctor said Marijke? I have to keep my leg elevated for at least 6 weeks! Imagine, 6 whole weeks! How am I supposed to earn my living?'
Marijke: 'Oh it will work itself out.'
Boudewijn: 'That’s all right for you to say but if I can’t make any money I soon won’t have enough to eat.'
Marijke: 'Come and eat with me everyday. Then I can check in on that leg of yours. As soon as it’s better you can go on your way again.'
Boudewijn: 'But my things were stolen, I told you. I have nothing to sell now.'
Marijke: 'No, that’s true. But you have 6 weeks to think of something. I’m sure we’ll find a solution together. Don’t you worry.'
Marijke did as she promised and looked after Boudewijn. After 6 weeks he could walk again. But how was he supposed to find work now.
The best thing to do was to look for the stolen merchandise.
He started a search of all the farms and asked everyone he met for advice but no one could point him in the right direction.
Downhearted he came back to the village.
When he passed the shoe maker’s house he heard loud laughter.
Shoemaker: 'Hahahahahaha!'
Boudewijn: 'Yeah the shoe maker can laugh it up.'
Shoemaker: 'Hahahahahaha!'
Boudewijn: 'He seems to be enjoying life. I think I’ll drop by.
Hello shoe maker.'
Shoemaker: 'Hahaha hello Boudewijn.'
Boudewijn: 'Well you’re doing well I hear.'
Shoemaker: 'No, not at all, I’m deeply unhappy.'
Boudewijn: 'I’m afraid I don’t understand that. You’re unhappy and you’re laughing about it?'
Shoemaker: 'Hahahahaha I can never stop laughing. It’s been going on for almost 6 weeks now. If I keep going like this I’ll laugh myself to death.'
Boudewijn: 'Hey, wait a minute. Did you happen to take any pills?'
Shoemaker: 'Pills? No, no, no hahaha
Hahaha '
Boudewijn: 'Let’s have a look around your house here shall we. Ah, what do I find here but my box of merchandise and if you please here’s my box of pills and you’ve eaten them all! No wonder you can’t stop laughing.
Come with me, friend. I’m taking you to the police. You can go to jail laughing.'
Shoemaker: 'Hahaha'
And so it happened that the shoe maker, laughing all the while, had to confess that he was the thief and for his crime continued to laugh until his death.
🎵That is the thief. Stop the thief. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.
He gave himself away. There you go. Stop the thief. 🎵
Fortunately, everything turned out well for the peddler. Marijke continued to look after Boudewijn faithfully and the two got along so well that after a while they got married. They were so happy that they didn’t need pills to laugh."
